Shahid Rind announced on Saturday that the leadership of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) was arrested for “attacking” Quetta Civil Hospital and “inciting people to violence,” a day after its members in the provincial capital were arrested while protesting alleged enforced disappearances.
On Friday, police used tear gas, water cannons, and blank shots to disperse BYC demonstrators who had organized a sit-in on Sariab Road near the University of Balochistan in protest of certain arrests, including those of the organization’s leaders.
The Balochistan government and the BYC both reported casualties as a result of each other’s operations, with the activist group claiming three killed and 13 injured, while the police stating around ten personnel were injured.
According to Bolan Medical College Hospital personnel, two bodies were brought in from the Sariab Road area. The bodies were eventually removed by the heirs.
Officials at Quetta Civil Hospital Quetta reported one body and nine injured police officers, including a female constable, were transported to the institution.
Other accounts said that the BYC workers took three bodies with them and held a protest sit-in on Munir Mengal Road.
In reaction to the purported casualties stemming from the police operation, BYC head organiser Dr Mahrang Baloch issued a call for a provincial shutter-down strike late last night.
Quetta and other regions of Balochistan went on strike today in response to the BYC demand.
The gang also claimed that its leaders including Dr Mahrang had been captured.
