RAWALPINDI (A News) – Imran Khan, the former prime minister and founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and his wife Bushra Bibi were sentenced to prison on Friday by an accountability court in the 190 million pound Al-Qadir Trust corruption case.
According to the decision, Imran Khan will serve 14 years in prison, while Bushra Bibi will serve seven years.
In addition to the jail term, Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi have been fined Rs1 million and Rs500,000, respectively. If Imran fails to pay the fine, he would face an extra six months in prison, while Bushra Bibi will face three months.
The court also ordered authorities to take over Al-Qadir University.
Bushra Bibi was arrested after the verdict was announced in court.
Judge Nasir Javed Rana of the Anti-Corruption Court announced the verdict in Adiala Jail about 11:30 a.m.
Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were led to a temporary courtroom on the jail grounds, where a judge was present. Barrister Salman Akram Raja of the PTI, as well as Bushra Bibi’s daughter and son-in-law, were present in court to hear the decision.
Irfan Ahmed, Sohail Arif, and Awais Arshad from the NAB’s prosecution team were also present.
Barrister Gohar, the chairman of the PTI, and Shoaib Shaheen also appeared in court. Gohar assured the journalists that there will be no further delays in the judgment.
He stated that the PTI will accept the ruling and wanted justice, which the party had been denied in the previous two years.
