The first government-approved shipment to leave Port Qasim marks the official resumption of direct commerce between Bangladesh and Pakistan since their split in 1971.
Bangladesh has agreed to buy 50,000 tons of Pakistani rice through the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP), which is a significant step in the two countries’ commercial ties. The deal was completed at the beginning of February.

With the first 25,000-ton shipment now on its way to Bangladesh, the rice shipment will be distributed in two stages. Early March is the planned departure date for the second wave. Direct shipping routes and stronger commercial relations between the two countries are anticipated outcomes of this trade agreement.

An important turning point in maritime trade ties will be reached when a Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) ship transporting government goods docks at a port in Bangladesh for the first time.

This achievement is viewed as a step in the right direction toward restoring trade routes that have been closed for decades and promoting economic cooperation.
