(AFP) – The Kosovo government said Friday that official institutions will be prohibited from using the popular social networking app TikTok, citing security concerns.

The action is the latest in a slew of rules and threats aimed at the China-based app by governments throughout the world, citing concerns that personal data may be accessed by Chinese officials.

“All public institutions that own and administer state communication networks are obliged to impose the necessary technical restrictions to stop the operation of the services of the social network ‘TikTok’ in official workplaces,” Prime Minister Albin Kurti’s office stated in a statement.

The statement cited “cyberthreats” originating from the app as the cause for the prohibition.
