(Reuters) – The Australian government said on Saturday that it had successfully test-fired a Raytheon (RTX.N) SM-6 missile from a Navy ship, marking a significant step toward procuring and integrating the air-defense weapon into its arsenal.
The HMAS Sydney carried out the test near the US state of Hawaii as part of the Pacific Dragon 2024 exercise, according to Australia’s defense ministry, describing it as a “significant milestone” in a pact initially agreed in 2021.
The SM-6 is the most modern naval air defense missile in the United States’ arsenal, capable of targeting ships and ground targets as well as air-to-air situations.
