MANILA (Reuters) – On Saturday, the Philippine military sharply condemned China’s air force’s “dangerous and provocative actions” on a disputed shoal in the South China Sea.

It was the first time the Philippines has protested about harmful acts by Chinese aircraft, rather than navy or coast guard boats, since President Ferdinand Marcos Jr entered office in 2022.

On Thursday morning, two People’s Liberation Army Air Force aircraft performed a risky maneuver and dropped flares in the path of a Philippine Air Force NC-212i propeller aircraft performing a normal maritime patrol over the Scarborough shoal, according to a military statement.
