THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, INDIA (Reuters) Landslides in the hills of India’s southern Kerala state killed at least 41 people and injured scores more, according to local media, with rescue attempts hampered by the collapse of a vital bridge in the area.
According to State Health Minister Veena George, more than 70 people were hurt, while the Indian Express reported that many people were likely washed away in the Chaliyar river.
“The situation is serious. “The government has pressed all agencies into rescue,” state Forest Minister A K Saseendran told Reuters following the landslides in Kerala’s Wayanad district. More rain was expected throughout the day.
