TOKYO(Reuters) — At high-level security discussions in Tokyo on Sunday, the United States will unveil a substantial overhaul of its military command structure, as well as other measures to strengthen defense ties with its Asian ally, according to a US official.

The redesign comes as Tokyo plans to construct a new joint headquarters to manage its military forces by March in order to better coordinate with Washington on the mounting regional threats originating from China and North Korea.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin will meet with Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa and Defense Minister Minoru Kihara later on Sunday.
