PARIS (AFP) — Hady Habib was over 5,000 kilometers away, earning a pitiful $1,350 at a low-level tournament in Canada, while Carlos Alcaraz was winning $3.5 million for winning the Wimbledon trophy.
After two weeks, the 25-year-old Lebanese player finds himself against the third-ranked player in the world in the opening round of the Olympics.
The footballer, who was born in Texas, told AFP, “I was in shock when I heard.”
“Hopefully I can inspire lots of people in Lebanon.”
Habib, who is now rated 275th in the world, was only expected to compete in doubles at the Olympics with Benjamin Hassan.
But after a string of injury withdrawals, he entered the singles draw as an alternative.
