India defeated longtime rivals Pakistan by 61 runs on Sunday to advance to the next round of the T20 World Cup, a match that had been in doubt until a few days ago.
Suryakumar Yadav’s team scored 175-7 after getting off to a flying start with Ishan Kishan’s magnificent 77, and then bowled Pakistan for 114 in 18 overs.
Pakistan’s loss extended their dismal record against India in World Cup matches.
India has won eight of the nine T20 World Cup matches and all eight of the ODI World Cup games.
Pakistan got off to the worst possible start in their pursuit of 176 to win, with Sahibzada Farhan top-edging a slog across the line to mid-on for a duck in Hardik Pandya’s opening over.
Jasprit Bumrah’s second ball trapped Saim Ayub (6) in front, bringing the score to 6-2.
Captain Salman Agha was the next to depart, with another mistimed slog off Bumrah’s sixth delivery leaving his team in a bad spot at 13-3.
In the fifth over, spinner Axar Patel bowled Babar Azam for five, leaving Pakistan at 34-4.
Usman Khan provided some resistance, hitting 44 off 34 balls, including a six and six fours, in a bid to save the innings.
However, when he rushed down the field to Axar and Kishan stumped him by a mile, a mini-collapse of three wickets for five runs ensued, and the game was over at 78-7.
Earlier, India captain Suryakumar and his Pakistan counterpart Agha did not shake hands after the coin toss, which Agha won and decided to bowl.
Suryakumar also did not shake hands with Agha during any of their three Asia Cup matches in Dubai last year, including the final.
The Off-On Group The match was only confirmed six days ago when the Pakistani government reversed its vow to boycott it.
India’s opening batsman Abhishek Sharma recovered from a stomach virus but barely lasted four deliveries before falling without scoring.
Kishan was unconcerned at the loss of his partner and launched an assault on Pakistan’s bowlers, scoring fifty off 27 balls with two sixes and seven fours.
He was middling the ball all over the park, so it came as a big surprise when he was bowled by spinner Ayub after missing a straighter delivery.
