In a contentious tweeting case, an Islamabad court convicted lawyer and rights activist Imaan Mazari and her husband Hadi Ali Chattha to a total of 17 years in prison under multiple sections.
The decision was rendered during a stormy hearing during which the suspects boycotted the proceedings.
The ruling was made by the Islamabad District and Sessions Court, where the contentious Twitter case against Imaan Mazari and Hadi Ali Chattha was being tried.
The court concluded that both suspects attempted to harm the reputation of the state and its institutions through tweets based on false charges. They also attempted to incite the population against the institutions.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Afzal Majoka gave the written decision, which sentenced both accused to 17 years in jail and a Rs36 million fine.
According to the ruling, under Section 9 of the PECA, both suspects were sentenced to five years in jail and a Rs5 million fine. Section 10 of PECA imposes a 10-year penalty and a Rs30 million punishment, whereas Section 26A imposes a two-year sentence and a Rs1 million fine.
However, both accused were cleared of charges under Section 11 of the PECA.
