Former Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) head Lt Gen (retd) Faiz Hameed has contested the 14-year term imposed by a military court and requested a copy of the ruling, his lawyer said on Monday.

Advocate Mian Ali Ashfaq stated that the appeal was lodged with the army commander two days ago, and that a separate application has been submitted to the Court of Appeal’s registrar at GHQ for a copy of the written verdict.

“The appeal has already been filed,” Ashfaq stated, without revealing the particular reasons claimed in the challenge.

According to the military, Hameed was found guilty on four counts by a Field General Court Martial (FGCM) on December 11: engaging in political activities, violating the Official Secrets Act “in a manner detrimental to the safety and interest of the state”, misusing authority and government resources, and causing wrongful loss to individuals.

According to officials acquainted with the situation, he is still being held at the Special Prison Rawalpindi and has not been transferred to the Adiala Jail.

Section 133-B of the Pakistan Army Act states that an accused has 40 days after conviction to initiate an appeal. Hameed’s appeal will be considered by a Court of Appeals chaired by a major general or a senior officer selected by the army chief, who may affirm, amend, or overturn the punishment.

Hameed’s prosecution arises from a 2017 lawsuit made by real estate developer Kanwar Moeez Khan. Khan said that Hameed, then a major general in the ISI, searched his home and company, seized property, and compelled him to pay Rs40 million in addition to sponsoring a private television channel.

The case reappeared in 2023 when the Supreme Court urged Khan to contact the defence ministry, which then launched a military investigation. A Court of Inquiry established in April 2024 found sufficient reasons to continue, resulting in Hameed’s arrest on August 12, that year.

According to the military’s propaganda wing, FGCM procedures began on August 12, 2024, and lasted around 15 months until the decision was published.

The court found him guilty on all charges after what the Inter-Services Public Relations characterized as “lengthy and laborious legal proceedings”. The sentence went into effect on December 11, 2025.

Hameed, who resigned from the military in November 2022, was the first former ISI director general and just the second three-star general in Pakistan’s history to be convicted by a military court and condemned to jail.

The investigation subsequently included numerous more retired military individuals, including retired Brig Ghaffar, retired Brig Naeem Fakhar, and retired Col Asim. However, the court’s conclusion did not explain their legal standing or make any findings against them.
