WASHINGTON (Reuters)— According to a source familiar with the matter, the Trump administration is considering preventing the Chinese AI chatbot DeepSeek from being deployed on US federal equipment due to national security concerns.

US officials are worried about DeepSeek’s handling of customer data, which the company maintains is stored on servers in China, according to the Wall Street Journal, which broke the news first.

According to the Journal, government officials are also considering removing the chatbot from app stores and regulating how US-based cloud service providers may deliver DeepSeek’s AI models to their customers. These talks are still in their early phases.

DeepSeek’s low-cost AI models provoked a big sell-off in global equity markets in January, with investors fearful that its entry might pose a challenge to existing AI sector giants.

On Thursday, a group of 21 state attorneys general requested Congress to pass legislation that would bar the download and use of DeepSeek artificial intelligence software on government systems.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
