An Italian journalist who had been imprisoned and incarcerated in Iran since December was released and returned to Rome on Wednesday, despite a diplomatic dispute between the two nations over an Iranian held in Milan.
A aircraft carrying Cecilia Sala arrived at Rome’s Ciampino Airport on Wednesday afternoon, hours after Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s office confirmed her release.
“Dad, I love you, this chapter is finally closed,” Sala said as she was reunited with her parents at the airport, where she was also received by Meloni and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani.
“Don’t say anything, now you need to stay calm for a bit, ok?” Meloni informed her. “I came to thank you and tell you that you have been strong.”
Meloni’s office had stated that Sala’s release was the result of “intense work through diplomatic and intelligence channels”.
Ilpost.it released a photo of Sala laughing with Meloni and Tajani, claiming it was shot by Sala’s boyfriend, an internet journalist.
Sala, 29, was arrested on December 19, shortly after the United States and Italy detained two Iranian nationals for export crimes related to a horrific attack on American military members.
The journalist, who writes for the Italian newspaper Il Foglio and hosts a news podcast produced by Chora Media, was held in isolation in Tehran’s Evin jail.
