(Web Desk) – Iran is eager to continue nuclear discussions with the United States, according to President Masoud Pezeshkian, but only if Washington can rebuild confidence after recent confrontations.
In an interview with former US television presenter Tucker Carlson published on Monday, the Iranian president remarked, “We see no problem in re-entering the negotiations,” but stressed that Tehran needed guarantees that strikes like those in June would not occur again.
The remarks came only weeks after a dramatic escalation between Iran and Israel, which included US assaults on Iran’s nuclear facilities. The fighting jeopardized a next session of nuclear talks between Washington and Tehran.
“How are we going to trust the US again?” Pezeshkian inquired throughout the interview. “We re-entered the negotiations, then how can we know for sure that in the middle of the talks, the Israeli regime will not be given the permission again to attack us?”
An alleged assassination attempt
President Pezeshkian also accused Israel of attempting to kill him during the crisis. “They did try, certainly. They behaved appropriately, but they failed,” he claimed, alleging that an Israeli attack targeted a conference he was attending.
The Israeli attack in mid-June reportedly killed hundreds of Iranians, including senior military leaders and nuclear specialists. According to authorities, the Iranian counterattack with missiles and drones killed 28 people in Israel. The brief but severe fighting came to an end on June 24 with a cease-fire, which has since held.
WARNING OF ‘FOREVER WARS’
Pezeshkian criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s attitude to the area, accusing him of leading the United States into an everlasting struggle. “The US administration should refrain from getting involved in a war that is not America’s war, it is Netanyahu’s war,” according to him.
He also addressed concerns about Iran’s nuclear plans. “We have never been after developing a nuclear bomb,” he declared, citing an Islamic rule by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei that prohibits such weapons.
Finally, Pezeshkian attempted to reassure Americans about Iran’s position. “Iran has never invaded another country in the last 200 years,” he remarked, emphasizing that chants like “Death to America” target perceived injustice and aggressiveness rather than the American people themselves.
