MOSCOW (Reuters) – A landmine killed a Russian state television journalist and critically wounded her cameraman in Russia’s Belgorod district near the Ukrainian border, state television reported on Wednesday.
According to a statement released by the Pervy Kanal TV channel, war journalist Anna Prokofieva and cameraman Dmitry Volkov stepped on a Ukrainian military landmine.
Prokofieva, 35, “died while performing her professional duty,” the statement read.
Ukraine has launched periodic drone and shelling strikes on Russia’s southern Belgorod area, with unsubstantiated reports of ground fighting there as the Ukrainians retreat from Kursk, another Russian territory bordering Ukraine.
An artillery attack earlier this week killed six persons, including two Russian journalists and their driver, who were on assignment in Moscow-controlled areas of eastern Ukraine’s Luhansk region, according to Russian officials and media reports.
The Committee to Protect Journalists reports that about 20 journalists have been slain since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
