Cate Blanchett has spoken candidly about Hollywood, addressing the lingering problem of equal pay.
The Australian actress, known for her Oscar-winning performances in Blue Jasmine and The Aviator, pondered on industry changes after the #MeToo movement. In an exclusive interview with The Observer, the 52-year-old spoke candidly about her own sexual harassment by Harvey Weinstein and the movement’s long-term consequences.
She went on: “The conversation had just begun, and suddenly everything was being discredited and undermined, so we’re still fighting for the same basic discussions.”
When it came to equal compensation in Hollywood, Blanchett was blunt: “We’re nowhere near equal pay!” She emphasized that, despite several crucial debates, the sector has not made much progress on this front.
She said, “Talking about it loudly does not mean action has been taken. There is a larger concentration of wealth than maybe at any time in human history, and we can see where it has led us.
Blanchett is presently appearing in The Seagull at the Barbican.
