PESHAWAR – Local peace committees comprised of tribal, political, and communal leaders have been formed to restore peace in Kurram.

The committees, which included members from all religions, oversaw the safe delivery of necessary items.

The first convoy of cars bringing food and supplies will left Thall for Parachinar at 10 a.m. on January 4, 2025, under police protection.

This move follows a January 1 peace accord in which local leaders agreed to put personal and ethnic differences aside for the sake of safety. Additional law enforcement agencies will be on standby in case of an emergency.

Kurram’s ongoing troubles are mostly related to local land and tribal conflicts, which are sometimes misrepresented as sectarian violence. Commitments were made to disarm within 15 days and dismantle bunkers within a month.

The peace committees are made up of 27 members from Lower Kurram, including former MNA Pir Haider Ali Shah, and 48 members from Upper Kurram, led by former Senator Sajjad Hussain Turi.
