Wildfires erupt in Spain as the heatwave peaks

MADRID (Reuters) – Hundreds of firemen, backed up by waterbomber aircraft, attempted to put out two wildfires that had been raging in eastern Spain since Tuesday, and much of the rest of the nation is on red alert for heat and fire.

When a fire broke out in neighboring hills in Benasau, east of Valencia, emergency services had to evacuate several hundred inhabitants as a precaution.
Firefighters reported that the “fire is evolving favourably” after all-night efforts.

Another fire, in the province of Cuenca further inland, has destroyed more than 1,500 hectares of vegetation since Tuesday. Both fires have been classified as serious.
