Ethiopian boat tragedy results in 19 reported deaths

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) – A boat capsized on a river in Ethiopia’s northwest, resulting in at least 19 fatalities, according to a state-run media site on Sunday.

According to the state-run Ethiopian Press Agency (EPA), the tragedy happened on Saturday in the Amhara area while a group of people were crossing the River Tekeze, which forms part of Ethiopia’s border with Eritrea.

When the disaster happened, there were at least 26 persons on board.

According to EPA, only two dead have been recovered thus far, while seven people—including a child—have been saved.
