MANILA (Reuters) — A marine tanker carrying industrial petroleum collapsed in strong seas off the Philippines on Thursday, resulting in a major oil spill as coast guard rescuers searched for a missing crew member, according to officials.
According to Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista, sixteen of the seventeen crew members of the MT Terra Nova were rescued when the ship capsized off the coast of Limay in Bataan province. A search is currently underway for the missing sailor.
“There is already an oil spill. “We are currently unable to dispatch our resources due to strong winds and high waves,” Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista said during a situation briefing.
The ship was carrying 1,494 metric tons of industrial fuel, Bautista stated.
