AMMAN (Reuters) — The Iranian-backed militant organisation Hezbollah announced on Sunday that it had launched a drone attack on Mount Hermon in the Israeli-occupied Syrian Golan Heights, where Israel operates a crucial surveillance centre.
It said this was the first such bombing since it began trading fire with Israel on October 8, a day after its Palestinian affiliate Hamas assaulted southern Israel, launching the Gaza war. Hezbollah says it will cease activities only when the war is over.
Although it had previously targeted other regions of the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, Lebanon’s Hezbollah claimed it was the first time it had struck the military target at the highest elevation in Israeli-controlled territory.
