An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Quetta has granted police a 10-day physical remand for Dr Mahrang Baloch, the leader of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC), and five other members of the organization.

The ATC’s judgment extends their continuous imprisonment, which has already lasted more than three months.
Six BYC members, including Dr. Mahrang, were brought to Judge Saadat Bazai at the hearing on Tuesday. The court agreed the prosecutor’s plea to prolong their remand, allowing investigators extra time to interview them. Gulzadi, Bebow Baloch, Sibghatullah Shahji, Ghaffar Baloch, and Beberg Baloch are the other incarcerated activists.

Advocates Israr Baloch and Shoaib Baloch defended the inmates in court, arguing against their lengthy confinement. However, the judge found in favor of the state, citing a need for additional investigation.
The BYC, which has been recognized for its advocacy against enforced disappearances in Balochistan since 2018, has come under increased attention from law enforcement forces.

Dr. Mahrang and many of her colleagues were first detained in March during a heated demonstration near Quetta’s Civil Hospital. Authorities have accused them of causing public disturbance and confronting police during the event.

Dr. Mahrang is now being imprisoned in Quetta’s Hudda District Jail under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO).
