ISLAMABAD – On Thursday, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) president and former prime minister petitioned the Supreme Court against his conviction in the Toshakhana case.
The PTI chief’s legal team submitted a plea to get him released from Attock prison.
According to the appeal, the PTI chairman, as an ex-prime minister, is a victim of political vendetta, since more than 180 charges have been filed against him.
The PTI sought the Supreme Court to intervene and prevent the PTI chief from being arrested in other cases.
Respondents in the petition include the federal government, the Inspector General of Punjab and Balochistan, and Superintendent Jail Attock.
The suit also names the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), and the Anti-Terrorism Courts of Lahore and Islamabad as defendants.
This petition was submitted in accordance with Article 184(3) of the Constitution.
Previously, a plea filed by the chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) appealing his conviction in the Toshakhana case would be considered on August 22 by a two-member panel of the Islamabad High Court (IHC).
IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Tariq Jahangiri are on the bench.
In the plea, the PTI head asked the court to declare the trial court’s decision unconstitutional and to vacate it.
On August 5, Additional District and Sessions Judge Humayun Dilawar condemned the PTI head to three years in jail and fined him Rs100,000 for fraud in the Toshakhana case. His license was also suspended for five years as a result of the judgment.
According to the petition, the verdict is “totally misdirected” and the prosecution failed to produce adequate evidence against the appellant.
