In one of the deadliest U.S. wildfires in recent years, thousands of Hawaii residents fled their homes on Maui as fires spread across the island, burning portions of a centuries-old town and killing at least 36 people.

In Lahaina Town, which dates back to the 1700s and has long been a popular tourist destination, the fire left behind burning piles of rubble where historic buildings once stood in addition to burned-out cars on once-busy streets. On Wednesday, firefighters battled fires in many locations on the island, which drove some parents and kids to jump into the water.
