Protesters stopped major motorways in Israel on Tuesday after parliament gave preliminary approval to a bill that would limit some of the Supreme Court’s power, with the complete support of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s hard-right ruling coalition.
Footage showed throngs of Israelis waving flags at major crossroads and on motorways in central Israel, the business capital Tel Aviv, and near the entrance to Jerusalem. Some others slept on the roadways, while others hurled flares.
Police used a water cannon to disperse some protestors and took others away by force, according to police, who said 24 people were arrested.
More protests were planned across the country on Tuesday, including at Israel’s main international Ben Gurion airport.
