Torrential rain in northern India has killed at least 22 people and caused landslides and flash floods, authorities and local media said on Monday.

After severe rains lashed the national capital over the weekend, schools in New Delhi were shuttered, while authorities in the Himalayan regions of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand urged people not to leave their homes unless absolutely essential.

According to the Times of India, at least 22 people were killed in floods and landslides across the northern regions of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Punjab on Sunday.
