Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, the leader of the Awami Muslim League (AML), claimed that the government has altered the entire structure of the budget for the upcoming fiscal year 2023–24 by enacting an additional tax worth Rs215 billion.

During the days leading up to Eidul Adha, when Muslims sacrifice goats, cows, camels, and other halal animals as part of an Islamic ritual, he claimed in a series of tweets that the government had “slaughtered” the poorer sections of society.

Given the high level of inflation, closed manufacturing, and unemployment, how could the government collect further taxes? “No one knows about the hidden deal with the IMF,” he questioned.
