Mexico said on Friday that in trade dispute settlement meetings sought by Washington earlier in the day, it will rebut US assertions over agricultural biotech measures, including proposals to ban its use of genetically modified (GM) maize.

The call for comment comes as the North American neighbours inch closer to a full-fledged trade conflict under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) over Mexico’s rules limiting the use of GM maize, which it imports from the US.

If the talks fail to resolve concerns after 75 days, Washington may request that the matter be decided by a dispute resolution panel.
Mexico stated that it was dedicated to “constructive dialogue” with the United States in order to “reach a mutually satisfactory agreement.”
