A ruling by Portugal’s cybersecurity council CSSC may officially forbid telecom companies from utilising Chinese equipment in their ultra-fast 5G mobile networks and the 4G platforms that the new technology is built on.

The CSSC, the prime minister’s advisory committee, issued a paper on May 23 that represents yet another setback to Huawei’s (HWT.UL) attempts to enter the Portuguese 5G market and perhaps prolong current contracts.

According to a legislation passed in August of last year, the government has the authority to decide “the exclusion, restrictions on use, or the cessation of use of equipment or services” provided by telecom firms, and to impose requirements and deadlines on operators.

The government was silent at the time.
