MANILA The Philippines and Germany announced on Sunday that they will sign a defense cooperation agreement this year, committing to uphold the Indo-Pacific region’s international rules-based order.

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius and his Philippine counterpart Gilberto Teodoro agreed to build long-term partnerships between their armed services in order to improve training and bilateral exchanges, examine ways to boost bilateral arms cooperation, and collaborate on joint projects.

The two met in Manila for the first visit by a German defense minister as their countries celebrate 70 years of diplomatic relations.

Teodoro stated that the Philippines will be “looking to engage Germany as a possible supplier of these capabilities” as it seeks to modernize its military to strengthen its external defense.
