The leader of election winners Move Forward will not be able to run for prime minister again in Thailand’s parliament next week, according to a deputy speaker, who made the announcement after rivals thwarted his bid by opposing his re-nomination.

Two months after his party’s unexpected election victory over military-backed opponents, parliament’s decision to reject Pita Limjaroenrat following a protracted debate over his legitimacy on Wednesday triggered demonstrations.

In each parliamentary session, a candidate may only be nominated once, according to Deputy House Speaker Pichet Chuamuangphan, who spoke to Reuters on Thursday.
