In the 2024 Republican presidential field, former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley has taken one of the most hawkish positions on China, advocating for Washington to severely restrict relations with its geopolitical rival in order to address a sharp increase in overdose deaths linked to fentanyl in the United States.
“We’ve attempted sanctions, but they are ineffective. The pressure needs to be increased. In an address to the American Enterprise Institute, a right-leaning think tank in Washington, Haley said, “As president, I will push Congress to revoke permanent normal trade relations until the flow of fentanyl ends.”
