ISLAMABAD – The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) brought former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman Imran Khan into jail in the Al-Qadir Trust case on Tuesday, leading the IHC to intervene.
According to Imran Khan’s cousin, Saifullah Niazi, the PTI head was detained on the grounds of the Islamabad High Court, where he appeared in two cases. He was transferred to the Rawalpindi office of the NAB. In the operation, the NAB team was aided by Pakistan Rangers soldiers.
IHC goes into action –
Amir Farooq, Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court, acted quickly and called the IGP and Secretary Interior to court within 15 minutes. He said that it should be obvious which case Imran Khan was engaged in and why he was detained. He said that the behaviour was clearly wrong.
He said that if the IGP and Secretary of Interior did not appear in court, he would not hesitate to call Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. He also said that he will take action against the prime minister and other ministries.
Separately, Barrister Gohar Khan, who was present at the IHC during Imran’s detention, said Imran was ‘tortured’.
“They hit Imran’s head and leg,” he informed reporters, saying Rangers had apprehended the former PM. Gohar further claimed that the PTI chairman’s wheelchair was thrown aside during the arrest.
According to a witness, immediately after Imran entered the IHC gate, paramilitary men and armoured personnel carriers followed him. The armoured trucks blocked the entrance, and Khan was carried away soon after under tight protection, according to the witness.
The PTI tweeted video of Khan’s detention, which showed hundreds of security men in riot gear hauling him away in a vehicle. Marriyum Aurangzeb, the Minister of Information, did not immediately reply to a request for comment on the detention.
Mr Khan’s corruption complaint is one of more than 100 filed against him after he was deposed in a parliamentary vote in April of last year. He completed four years of his five-year tenure. Attempts to arrest Khan from his Lahore residence have already led in violent fights between his followers and law enforcement forces.
According to anti-corruption officials, the National Accountability Bureau filed arrest warrants for Khan last week in a different graft case in which he had not gotten bail, which would have protected him from arrest under the country’s rules.
According to the authorities, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, Khan will be taken before an anti-graft tribunal later on Tuesday.
- Government assertion –
Meanwhile, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah said that Imran has failed to appear in court despite multiple summonses. He said that the arrest was made by the National Accountability Bureau for inflicting national treasury damages.
