LAHORE – The Lahore High Court (LHC) dismissed a plea for protective bail submitted by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman and former Prime Minister Imran Khan after he failed to appear before the court on Thursday.
The court had granted Imran Khan till 6:30 p.m. to appear in court. Despite being granted time, the PTI chairman failed to appear in court, and the two-member LHC panel rejected his petition.
In the midst of arrest rumours, the former prime minister opted to appear before the Lahore High Court (LHC). The path outside the former premier’s home has been cleared for his appearance in court. PTI supporters yelled chants in favour of Mr Khan and his party on this occasion.
Imran Khan had earlier opted not to attend in court, claiming health concerns after being prevented from flying by physicians.
Mr Khan submitted the protected bail plea after his release was revoked by an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in a case brought against him for demonstrating outside the ECP headquarters on Wednesday.
Nevertheless, the high court conditioned Mr Khan’s release on his personal attendance in the case and ordered him to appear till 9 a.m. on Thursday.
The appellant should be brought before the court on a stretcher or in an ambulance until 8 p.m., according to Judge Tariq Saleem Sheikh.
Mr Khan indicated in his plea that he was a law-abiding citizen who wished to submit himself to the court. He sought to submit a new interim bail plea in court, so protective bail should be granted to him, according to the plea.
The appeal further said that Mr Khan had been named in the case in order to politically victimise him. According to the petition, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) dismissed Mr Khan’s bail request and granted him a medical exemption from appearing in court.
