WASHINTON: Violence against Muslims has increased dramatically in India under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, frequently going unpunished.
According to a column in the New York Times, the Indian government has enacted laws and policies that discriminate against Muslims, including alterations to citizenship laws that disfavour them and the abolition of Kashmir’s unique status due to its Muslim majority.
The BJP administration has been vigorously repressing all kinds of dissent and free expression in the meanwhile. It has also strengthened its emergency powers to restrict material it wishes to conceal from the public and made it easier to imprison dissidents under nebulous counterterrorism laws.
The US newspaper said that Modi would almost probably seek for office again the following year. If he is elected and spends a third term, he will surpass Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi as the longest-serving prime ministers in Indian history.
It is possible that Modi, who would be given more confidence by winning a third term, will try to modify the Constitution fundamentally and proclaim India to be a Hindu country.
According to the author, it is tragic that India is rising at a time when it is less free, less tolerant, and more eager to throw out the pieces of democracy in order to construct a temple of national glory centred on a single religion.
