ISLAMABAD – After accepting a one-day transit remand in a case involving interference in official affairs, a federal court in the federal capital handed over Awami Muslim League (AML) chairman Sheikh Rashid Ahmed to the Murree police.
Mr Ahmed was arrested by Murree police on February 3 for meddling in official matters and resisting arrest, a day after he was charged with planning a conspiracy to kill Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan.
The PTI ally, who was placed on 14-day judicial remand in a Zardari-related case last week, appeared before the district and sessions court, where the Murree police requested transit remand of the AML head.
However, Mr Ahmed’s counsel, Ali Bukhari, said that a judicial magistrate had similarly denied a similar plea for transit remand. The prosecutor informed the judge that the police were required to bring the senior lawmaker at Murree court.
After hearing arguments, the judge accepted the police plea and granted one-day detention while ordering the police to bring him back to court tomorrow (Thursday).
The AML head also briefly addressed to journalists when he disclosed, “I was requested to see an important individual last night but I declined it”. “They want me to shift my political allegiances, but I’m not going to do that,” he stated.
