ISLAMABAD: The newly established joint investigative team (JIT) was given a two-week deadline by the Supreme Court on Thursday to deliver an interim report about the death of veteran journalist Arshad Sharif.
After Mr. Sharif was fatally shot by Kenyan police in a suspected instance of mistaken identity, a suo motu case was heard by a five-member court led by Justice Umar Ata Bandial.
As part of today’s session, Additional Attorney General Amir Rehman presented a notification of a new JIT that had been established in accordance with the top court’s directives.
Five people make up the investigation team: DIG IB Sajid Kiyani, Waqaruddin Syed from the FIA, Murtaza Afzal from MI, Mohammad Aslam from the ISI, and DIG Awais Ahmed from the FIA.
Prime suspects, such as Waqar Ahmed and Khurram Ahmed, would, if necessary, be returned to Pakistan through Interpol, the additional attorney general said the court. He claimed that the Kenyan government’s collaboration was the only factor in the murder case’s whole inquiry.
The chief judge said that if the JIT runs into any problems while conducting the inquiry, they might go before the supreme court. Additionally, he gave orders for the SSP of the Islamabad Police and his group to assist the JIT.
The court then postponed the case’s hearing for two weeks.
The federal government was instructed to establish a new joint investigative team (JIT) a day earlier by the supreme court to look into the killing of veteran journalist Arshad Sharif.
