Ukraine, Kyiv AFP/Getty Images Ukraine reported Monday that at least 5,000 people have died in the “catastrophic” humanitarian calamity gripping impoverished Mariupol, as fighting raged throughout Kyiv, including in a key neighbourhood where defenders claim to have forced out Russian invaders.

Multiple cities in Ukraine remained under Russian shelling on the eve of new face-to-face peace talks in Turkey on Tuesday, as Kyiv and its Western backers attempted to end the month-long conflict.

According to a top Ukrainian official, at least 5,000 people have been buried and as many as 10,000 may have died in the besieged southern port of Mariupol, confirming the city’s worst-case scenarios of destruction.
