The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) ruled the Election Act Amendment Ordinance illegal on Saturday.
Section 181A, according to the Election Commission, is in direct contradiction with Election Act Clause 233. Amending the legislation goes against openness and equal chance for all candidates. Campaigning is prohibited for the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, and Governors.
Speakers, Federal Ministers, and Prime Minister’s Advisers are prohibited from campaigning under the Code of Conduct. Members of the Assembly and Senators will be allowed to campaign on a conditional basis. Members of Parliament who are campaigning for election will follow the regulations.
