MOSCOW (AFP) – As Moscow’s invasion of the pro-Western country reached its seventh day, the Russian army took possession of the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson on Wednesday.
In televised statements, defence ministry spokesperson Igor Konashenkov stated, “Russian divisions of the armed forces have assumed full control of the regional centre of Kherson.”
He said that public transportation and public services were working normally.
“Food and necessary products are not in short supply in the city,” he continued.
He said the Russian army and local authorities were in negotiations about preserving order, safeguarding the population, and keeping public services running.
Igor Nikolayev, the mayor of Kherson, wrote on Facebook: “Ukraine is still our name. Still standing solid.”
He stated he needed to “collect the (corpses of the) deceased” and “replace electricity, gas, water, and heating where they are destroyed,” apparently contradicting the Russian army’s assertions.
“However, I must tell you straight away: doing these things today would need a miracle,” he continued.
Last Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered forces to invade pro-Western Ukraine in order to “de-militarize” and “denazify” the country.
Konashenkov stated on Wednesday that the Russian military has damaged over 1,500 military facilities in Ukraine, including 58 planes, 46 drones, and 472 tanks and other armoured vehicles.
