WASHINGTON (AFP) – President Joe Biden cautioned Russia on Wednesday that a full-fledged invasion of Ukraine would be costly, but he created uncertainty by implying that a “minor” intrusion would elicit far less retaliation from the West.
Biden stated that he does not believe Russian President Vladimir Putin wants a conflict, but that he has created a scenario that is proving incredibly difficult to defuse – one that could easily “get out of hand” in the area.
“My hunch is that he will relocate. He must take action “Biden made the remarks during a news conference commemorating his one year in office.
He speculated that Putin may be contemplating “something substantially short of a large invasion” to put the US and NATO to the test, which would be met with less resistance from the allies.
“It’s one thing if it’s a tiny intrusion, and then we wind up fighting over what to do and what not to do, and so on,” he explained.
